What is the NJLAD?

New Jersey takes employment discrimination seriously and has a number of laws in place to ensure that none of its residents are denied the right to work because of a factor that has nothing to do with their ability to perform their job. One of those laws is the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, or NJLAD. Not only does the NJLAD prevent people from being discriminated against for employment purposes, but also for housing, public accommodations, and credit, with a few exceptions.

As far as protection from employment discrimination goes, people are protected from being denied a job, benefits, promotion, etc., due to their race, religion, color, national origin, age, nationality, marital status, sex, pregnancy status, gender identity, disability, military status, sexual orientation, or genetic information. The exceptions that were previously mentioned simply include that you can, in fact, be discriminated against within New Jersey for housing and public accommodations due to age or military service status. However, it is not as extreme as it sounds. For example, you’re not really being discriminated against for your age, but there are certain housing communities that you can only live in if you are 55 years of age or older.

It is important that you have proof of discrimination when you try to bring a case of this matter against a current, former, or potential employer. If you feel as though you were denied a job or a promotion because of something about yourself that you have no control over, you should consult with an experienced New Jersey employment attorney. You should not sit idly by and accept this behavior and should absolutely take action if you suspect discrimination. Contact the experienced employment law attorneys at the Vigilante Law Firm, P.C. to schedule an initial consultation. We would be happy to fight for your rights as an employee in New Jersey.
